Where do you find most of your style inspiration?

I always think of 3 main people who've really influenced me in my life and the first is my sister. When we were younger she was so unbelievably cool; always wearing really rogue DIY things, I remember she had a big bolt as a necklace that she made and all her earrings were things like wrenches. She ALWAYS dressed differently to anyone else around her and I just thought she was the coolest human. When I got a bit older and discovered Iris Apfel, I know she's a bit of an obvious one but she really was just the GOAT of being totally yourself - I remember watching her amazing documentary the summer before I went off to London College of Fashion and just imagining that I'd have her kind of life when I was up there just sashaying around in all of the fun outfits! The third person is someone who isn't here anymore but she was my housemate when I lived in London, Vic. Even when we were younger she was always known for having the most amazing dress sense but living with her for a few years and watching her always make an effort every morning (and honestly if you knew her you'd all agree - her level of effort was AMAZING) and she just inspired me to put the same level of care into my day to day. I don't know if she ever knew she inspired me as much as she did which makes me a little bit sad but I often think of her and her amazing wardrobe which also, being the same size, she always generously let me share!
Nowadays I kind of just go with the flow, I'm less about getting visual inspiration from people are more an aura of following people that just do what they like! It's a state of mind more than anything! Oh actually as I've written that my absolute current style icon is @whatmariewears on instagram - utter heaven in a human and joyous styling at every turn! 

What’s one thing in your wardrobe you could never part with?

VERY unfair to make me just choose one thing... but actually one thing does come to mind. It's a vintage Harrods orange and gold sequin jacket that I found on eBay and fell completely in love with! Is it a day to day jacket... not exactly but it's one of those that when you put it on you feel like a trillion dollars and it will NEVER leave me. Bury me in the sequin jacket! But as a lover and a vintage collector I'd be in a whole world of pain if I genuinely did have to only choose one! 

If you could only choose ONE Denim and Bone outfit to wear, what would it be?

Ohhh goddddd this is cruel. I definitely fell in love with styling the scarf as a top on the most recent shoot - that's something I think is a must must must & the fringed bag - sorry what! When I'm through my house purchasing nightmares that's the first thing on my list of things to buy, he's divine. I think I'd probably wear the scarf top over the gold slip dress from a few years ago but styling it as a skirt because they were everything and then... oh god am I going Kimono or jacket... I reckon Kimono you know. They're SO luxurious and the weight of them is everything and just sauntering around in it makes you feel like an absolute rock star. But then... the blue fringe coat. Ohh my god but even the chambray pj's as a two piece! No this isn't a fair question - YOU ANSWER THIS DAISY! 

What’s your favourite way to make an outfit feel more ‘you’?

Definitely a cowboy hat, definitely a cowboy boot (questionable as to whether they happen at the same time), a brilliant sunglass, ALWAYS something vintage and a silly little bag. I'm a more is more kind of gal which I'm so happy we're going back into that resurgence in the fashion world, it was such a bleak sad time when everyone just loved beige. I love a print clash, I love a bizarre unexpected layer but above all I do really love to be comfy too. I say all this but I will also happily just turn up somewhere in joggers if that's the me I'm feeling. I've always dressed for myself and my mood and not really labelled anything I do as such so that makes it quite easy to just play all of the fun characters when the mood takes you there! 

You’re often behind the camera as well as in front of it. What are you always drawn to when you’re taking photographs?

At the moment I'm REALLY into moments of people capturing their loved ones on their phones or cameras - I love the idea of challenging that wall between subject and shooter but also being able to humbly acknowledge that actually you can't bring out the version that the loved one can and passing that baton over to them while you simultaneously sneak in and capture it in some format. I love seeing dynamics that aren't performative and I've found that because I'm quite short I can get an angle that actually can be quite jarring at first but I love it - that sneaky in between weird moment! 

If we could take Denim and Bone anywhere in the world for a shoot, where are we going?

Ohh myyy gaaaaaddd I mean... India would be UNREAL to go and shoot - just imagining us just taking the styling to the absolute extreme but we'd just have to hope the film survived the heat and the airport scanners. Or maybe even Tokyo just leaning into the absolute excess of it all! Instead of the cowboy hat and boots with the new gorgeous dress, could see it with insane Japanese platform boots & a camera round their neck - oh always so many possibilities! 

What’s currently inspiring you?

I'm loving Amrit Singh's art - she's a model so her face is just art in itself but she's SUCH a talented artist, her paintings feel exactly like the kind of photo I want to capture, Indian families huddled together, oozing vibrancy and just that level of almost uncomfortable closeness. 
I'm also obsessed with Sabyasachi's most recent collection for his 25th Anniversary - it's just SO cool. I love an adornment and Indian high fashion is something else! Photography wise Amit Pasricha's old slide film travelling across India is stunning and is making me want to transition a little bit more into cinematic film stocks and slide film - this teamed with Baz Lurhmann's Romeo & Juliet which is always living rent free in my head of inspiration for the same reasons!
